Jean was born and raised in White Plains, NY. She graduated from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA where she met and married her sweetheart and lifelong partner, G. Thomas Oakley. They were married and lived in Barnegat, NJ for several years and then Ship Bottom for 65+years until his passing in 2016.
While her children were attending local LBI schools, Jean was a frequent substitute teacher and then worked as a bookkeeper for Island Realty, Surf City, NJ for 30+ years. She loved to travel, particularly to US historic sites, enjoyed going out to lunch with her dear friends, and loved to do crossword puzzles. Jean was an animal lover, and adored her dog Annie and Ms. Purr, a Ship Bottom stray cat that she nurtured for many years.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, John Clifford Black and Gertrude Schaad Black. She is survived by her 3 beloved daughters Carolyn Cranmer (Stacy) of Manahawkin; Deborah Oakley Smith (Mike) of Corryton, TN; Patricia Oakley of Barnegat; 3 grandchildren, Melissa Minarik (Jason Rahn), Brian Lebby (Angela), Kevin Lebby; 3 great grandchildren, Jaycie and Bentley Lebby and Alex Rahn, and 3 nieces, Sharon DeCastro (Don), Nancy Scully (Tom) and Paula Oakley.
Friends and family are invited to attend the viewing at Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Dr., Manahawkin, NJ on Thursday, September 15, 2022 from 5:00pm-8:00pm. Burial will be private.
