George E. Taggart, age 89, died peacefully on December 2, 2024, at his home in Ship Bottom, N.J. He was born on December 12, 1934 in Jersey City, N.J. George graduated Kearny High School and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
George was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, great-uncle and friend.
He proudly served in the U. S. Marine Corps and applied the discipline he learned from the service all throughout his life. George earned his college degrees while working full-time and attending night school. He was employed throughout the years by ITT Corporation, Otis Elevator, Plato Products and Concorde Electronics where he continued to work three days a week until the age of 85.
George played high school football, was a fan of the NY Giants & NY Mets, always had time to watch a soccer game and enjoyed being a spectator of golf more than he enjoyed playing the game itself. For over 20 years he spent most weekends caddying at the Upper Montclair Country Club.
In his younger years George was an active member of the Ulster Club in Kearny, NJ.
George was a proud PaPa serving as the number one fan of his three grandchildren. He enjoyed cheering them on from the bleachers and sharing with others everything he knew about their academics and school activities.
He was known in the neighborhoods of Bloomfield, Wyckoff & Long Beach Island as an avid dog walker, caring for his own dogs in earlier years & then in later years for his granddog.
George was loved for his willingness to help others and up until a few years ago he was always ready and able to jump in & lend a hand, whether as a driver, a car washer, a painter, a cleaner or simply as the person who took a quick run to the store for whatever was needed- everyone leaned on George. In recent years, as his health failed, George graciously accepted help from others including his wife of 65 years, Ellenor and his home health aide, Mo Kenawy.
George was predeceased by Ellenor only three weeks ago. He is survived by his children Ellen (Robert Jones) and Robert, his grandchildren Reagan Jones, Ian Jones and Emily Taggart, his sister Ruth Oehm (Raymond), his brother Donald, his Sister and Brother-in-Law, Nan and Sim Brown and his dear nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents George and Margaret Taggart and his brothers Eugene and William.
A private service for family will be held at Restland Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, Manahawkin, NJ.
Contributions in George’s memory can be made to Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org
