Edwin T. Fitzgerald, 74, of Port Republic, died Thursday, June 29 at Atlantic Regional Medical Center, Pomona, NJ. Edwin was born in Lakewood, NJ and was a football star and 1968 graduate of Lakewood HS. He served in the United States Navy from 1969-1972 stationed in Port Mugu, CA where he was a mechanic of F4 Phantoms during the Vietnam War. Edwin married his lifelong partner, Kathleen in 1970 and settled in Manahawkin where they lived for 28 years. The past 21 years he lived in Port Republic, where he enjoyed cutting the grass, woodworking, feeding the fish, and enjoying the views.
Edwin was the owner/operator of Fitzgerald's Custom Fabrication in Barnegat for over 40 years before retiring in 2019. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 232 in Barnegat.
Edwin was predeceased by his parents, William E in 2003 and Dorothea Clement in 2019. Surviving are his wife of almost 53 years, Kathleen (Morton) of Port Republic; a son and daughter-in-law Christopher and Tracey Fitzgerald of Parkertown; a daughter and daughter-in-law Jennifer Fitzgerald and Shelby Geno of Philadelphia, PA; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Brenda Allen 'Bubbles' of Florida, Noreen Stilwell of Manahawkin, Mariella Fitzgerald of Point Pleasant, and Sharon and Gene O'Grady of Barnegat; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday July 6 from 5-7pm at Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Drive, Manahawkin. Burial of cremains will be held at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown on Friday, July 7 at 11:00am. Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post 232 in Barnegat, NJ.
