Carmela E. Bond (Carmela Emma), known to all as “Millie”, passed away peacefully in her home on November 23, 2022.
She is survived by her three children, Louise Hyland, Steven Bond, and George Bond, and 7 grandchildren, Natalie Lebair, James Hyland, Beth Ann Hyland, Timothy Bond, Cassandra Bond, Claire Bond, and Trevor Bond. In addition to family, she was loved and remembered by countless friends and companions whom she met on her travels around the world, and maintained relationships with for decades until her passing.
Always a Queens girl at heart, she remembered with fondness her years at Bayside High School (class of 1950) and Queen’s College (class of 1954). She was the daughter of Italian immigrants, Anthony and Santina Emma, and the youngest of 4 children; Grace Tucci, George Emma, and Thomas Emma, who all preceded her in death.
Millie married her college sweetheart, James Bond, in 1955 and moved from Queens to start a life in Massachusetts and later New Hampshire, before eventually settling in Media, PA to raise their 3 children. Her professional career included roles as a Human Resources professional for Sears Roebuck and Colonial Penn (now Cigna), in addition to her years as a research librarian at General Motors. After being widowed in 1985, she left the corporate world to pursue other aspirations. It was in this pursuit that she met Captain John S. Holmes, and the two were wed in 1993, and later moved to Manahawkin, NJ in 2000. During their time together, they enjoyed traveling stateside and in all corners of the world, where they took the time to get to know the people and cultures in each place they visited. Their adventures together continued until John’s passing in 2019. She remained close to his extended family around the country.
Millie said herself that her greatest ambitions in life were to be a great wife, mother, and friend, and that she considered herself lucky to have married two great loves of her life. Her wonderful cooking, encyclopedic knowledge of the world and current events, impeccable sense of style, beautiful singing voice, and her honest and heartfelt advice were valued and admired by all who knew her, and will be missed by many.
