Dr. Sharon Dionne Londeree Istfan, age 57, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was a graduate of Hurricane High School, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and WVU School of Medicine. Sharon was happily married to Dr. Michael A. Istfan for 31 years. Together, they raised a family of three children.
Sharon’s medical career included her work as a pediatrician at Charleston Area Medical Center, where she specialized in child abuse and neglect, and served as the Pediatric Residency Program Director. She was involved in medical education as an awarded instructor for residents in training. During her last year of life, Sharon continued her professional journey at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, as a child abuse pediatrician.
Dr. Istfan made it her life’s mission to stand up for victims of child abuse and neglect. Among the many tributes paid to her was a special Advocate for Children award in 2012, from the WV Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics “for outstanding service and commitment to the health and welfare of the children of West Virginia.” Dr. Istfan was also recognized as a physician champion in the WV statewide pilot project for the prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Sharon was a dedicated mother, wife, and daughter who loved spending time with her family. She had a deep appreciation for literature and the arts, and one of her favorite activities was attending live musical theater productions with the people she loved. Sharon enjoyed reading books by authors from various backgrounds, and was always open-minded to new perspectives. She encouraged her children to expand their minds and think independently.
Sharon is survived by her husband Michael, three children—Samantha, Anthony, and Christopher, parents—William and Peggy Londeree, and her sister—Tara Kueker. She will be deeply missed by her entire family and community. Her kindness, discipline, and dedication to service was an inspiration to many, and she has touched countless lives over the course of her career.
