Mallie Frank Johnson, 90, of South Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. Mallie was born on March 20, 1934, to Elish and Mary Johnson. He was the third child born among their ten children. There were three boys and seven girls living in a household full of activity, everyone sharing responsibilities, and where lots of memories were being made.
At 27, Mallie met the love of his life Ethel Marie Campbell. They got married on Halloween and were married 63 years. They didn’t have any children, so all their nieces and nephews became their children. They babysat many of us and they were loved dearly by everyone. In 2021 life changed for Mallie. He lost his wife, his soulmate, and his best friend. Medical issues hindered his ability to take care of himself After an extensive hospital stay Mallie went to Genesis Healthcare Facility Valley Center. Here he had rehabilitation and some of the best nursing care. He became a favorite patient to all the staff at Valley. Other health issues led to making Valley his home for the last two years. Special thanks to the entire staff at Valley Center for their excellent care. Special thanks to Mallie’s niece, Kathy Graley, who took the responsibility for Mallie and Marie’s care the last ten years. We are thankful for anyone who has helped them in any way over the years.
Mallie was preceded in death by his parents, Elish and Mary Johnson; his wife, Ethel Marie Johnson; his brothers, Minor and Hobert Johnson; and his sisters, Freda Shamblin, Valley Bishop, and Violet Rollins.
Mallie is survived by four sisters, Sybil Peal from Tennessee, Carrie Hudson, Silvia McCune, and Donna Pauley, all from South Charleston. In addition, his numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends that will all miss him.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 11:00 am at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden. Pastor Randy Campbell of the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church will be officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
