Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. Dr. Cowen was born October 10, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father Harry Cowen
immigrated from England to Cincinnati at age 16. Harry worked at the Davis Tailoring Company of Cincinnati which manufactured all the WWII military uniforms among other wares including fine suits. Harry met and wed the only
daughter of the Tailoring Company, Rose Davis. Harry and Rose had two sons, Kenneth and Richard as well as daughter, Evonne. Richard was a graduate of Walnut Hills High School of Cincinnati, Ohio, cum laude
from 1948-1954. He was one of six National Merit Scholars in the nation. He chose to attend Princeton University where he received a full academic and athletic scholarship. He attended Princeton from 1954-1958 and was a National
Scholar receiving an A.B. with honors in the Classics. He was a member of the Ivy Club, was a recruited athlete for football and baseball and he also played team Rugby. He also enlisted in the Marine Corp Reserve while at Princeton.
Later in 1958, Richard attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine from 1958-1962 on a full scholarship. H~ was a member of the A.O.A. & PiKappa Epsilon Honoraries. In 1961, Richard met Nancy Ellen Grass in the hospital cafeteria at Cincinnati General which was affiliated with the U of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Nancy
was completing her anesthesia training to become a CRNA. A year later they were
married on April 15, 1962. Richard then interned at Jackson Memorial Hospital and attended Chicago Wesley
Memorial Hospital (Northwestern Medical School). He was drafted during the Vietnam conflict and was stationed at Andrews Airforce Base where he was a staff Radiologist at the U.S.A.F. Andrews Hospital. He received an Air Force
Commendation Medal. Richard went on to practice Radiology for many years in Ohio, Indiana and West
Virginia and Georgia. Richard retired to Charleston, WV in 2006 where he and Nancy were active
members at Bible Center Church. Richard and Nancy are parents to Jeffrey Todd Cowen, Scott Bradley Cowen
(deceased) and Cynthia Cowen Pasowicz. Grandparents to Anya, Scott and Elizabeth Pasowicz as well as Jack and Emma Cowen. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 2ih, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Bible Center Church, 100 Bible Center Drive, Charleston, WV 25314, with Pastors Chad Cowan and Bill Tansy officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. A visitation with family and friends will be held Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until service time.
