Ted Johnson Campbell, 76, of Elon, passed away on September 5, 2024 at his home, surrounded by family. He was the husband of Caperton Fox Campbell. They would have been married 16 years on September 6, 2024.
Born February 5, 1948 in Bedford, VA, he was the son of the late Rev. Eugene Clayton Campbell and Gwendolyn Johnson Campbell. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Barry Eugene Campbell. Ted was a self-employed Licensed Professional Counselor. He was a long-time member of Elon Baptist Church, where his father lovingly served as pastor for many years and helped build the current sanctuary.
Ted’s greatest joy was his family, and he cherished every moment with them. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, fishing, hunting, and spending time outdoors on his tractor and in his garden. He also fancied an occasional glass of Scotch, fiercely supported UVA basketball, and never stopped working to improve his golf game. He lived a fascinating and rewarding life, always full of love and an open mind. He had a true knack for storytelling, and his life stories are treasured memories that will live on through his family for generations.
Much of the community got to know Ted through Elon Greenhouse and Nursery, a business he owned and operated for many years in his early adult life. The community loved his open-house events each season and Ted always served his customers well, offering a wealth of knowledge and experience to anyone in need. That same sense of service led him into the next chapter of his life when he changed careers to serve those in need of mental health and substance abuse services. He earned an M.Ed, Psychology from Lynchburg College and eventually felt called to start his own counseling practice where he deeply touched countless lives, serving a broad range of individuals and teaching them skills that helped them attain their goals and build lives worth living. Ted was well-respected in the mental health support community, often having patients referred to him with severe mental illness who were not having success with other treatments. He had a special way of connecting with people and providing comfort with his words and presence. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, though his impact will live on forever.
In addition to his wife, Ted is survived by five children, Andrea Campbell Heapes and husband Bill of Charlottesville, Christopher Jacques Campbell and wife Jill, Jedd Patrick Campbell and wife Lori, and Clayton David Campbell and wife Promise, all of Elon, and Casey Johnson Campbell and wife Mallory of Amherst, and thirteen grandchildren, Meghan, Zachary, Christian, Kylie, Kennedy, Olivia, Lacey, Jake, Bryson, Laken, Adolyn, Eli, and Tatum.
A funeral service to celebrate Ted’s life will be conducted on Monday, September 9, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Elon Baptist Church with Pastor John Moxley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, September 9, 2024 from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Elon Baptist Church.
