The Reverend Maurice Edward Coffey, Servant of God, passed into his heavenly home on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, surrounded by members of his family and being cared for by a very special granddaughter, Leigh Ann Taylor.
He was born on September 30, 1932 to parents Sallie Ellen Campbell Coffey and Henry Loving Coffey.
He was born on Big Piney River in a house at a place called hog Camp.
He joined the United States Army in 1951 and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany through 1953 in the army of occupation. Upon returning to Virginia, he met and married Eva Lee Campbell. They were married for 45 years and had three children. The Reverend Coffey worked at James Lees Carpet Factory from the early 1950’s to the late 1960’s. He worked day shift there and often left that job only to run a gas station until 11:00 at night to provide for his family. He was also a member of the Glasgow Life Saving and First Aid Crew.
He moved his family to Madison Heights in 1969 to a house he built, working for J.B. forehand until going into business for himself as a contractor.
In 1970, he came to know the Lord as his Savior. In 1971, he was named a deacon at New Testament Baptist Church. In 1986, he graduated from a local bible university and became an ordained minister. He then became pastor of New Testament Baptist Church in Lynchburg shortly after. In recent years, Reverend Coffey attended Harvest Baptist Church where he enjoyed the fellowship of many wonderful Christian friends.
Reverend Coffey is survived by three children; Terry Coffey and wife Sharyn, Rickey Coffey and wife Vickie, Kimberly Taylor and husband Gordon, 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, friends and associates.
His wife, Eva Coffey, 11 siblings and 22 in laws and his parents Sallie and Henry Coffey, preceded him in death.
Throughout his life, Reverend Coffey was a carpenter, hunter, fisherman, mechanic, preacher, bible scholar, soldier, gardener but most significantly, a servant of God!
A service celebrating his life and faith will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Mark Snowden officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Rockbridge Memorial Park in Lexington, VA.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
