John was born in Houston, Texas, on December 29, 1935, to the late James and Joan Woods. His life was marked by a deep commitment to service, first to his country and later to his community and family.
John proudly served in the United States Navy for 22 years as part of the US Submarine Service, retiring as a Master Chief Engineman. His dedication to his work and his country earned him the respect and admiration of his peers. Following his retirement from the Navy, he transitioned to a civilian career at Ingalls Shipyard, where he served as the Director of Radiological Control Training. There, he contributed to the construction of nuclear submarines for the US Navy, continuing his lifelong commitment to excellence and safety.
John was a man of integrity, wit, and quiet strength. He valued family above all, and his legacy will live on through his wife of 66 years, Beverly A. Woods; his children, Brett Woods and Suzanne Walton; his two grandchildren, Mitch Walton (Brooke) and Mandi Bieri (Luke); and four great-grandchildren, Wade and Wren Walton, and Gracie and Kinsley Bieri. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2024 at the Jonesboro Baptist Church Cemetery in Roseland with the Rev. Dave Peters officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the US Navy Honor Guard.
