Howard Deane Carpenter, 88, of Amherst, died, Friday, October 21, 2011, at Fairmont Crossing. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Bowling Carpenter. Born March 22, 1923 in Amherst, he was the son of the late Rupert Deane Carpenter and the late Elsie Drummond Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was a retired, self-employed farmer and he was formerly employed by Bailey Spencer Hardware. Mr. Carpenter was also a member of Ivy Hill Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Carpenter was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Karl Tucker.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by one daughter, Freida Tucker of Amherst; two sisters, Helen Roberts of Monroe and Louise Martin, also of Monroe; one brother, Phillip Carpenter and his wife, Maxine of Staunton; two grandchildren, Heather Tucker and her friend, Gregory Mays of Piney River and Jarrod Tucker and his friend, Marion Lopez of West Chester, OH; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Cole Simpson of Piney River.
A funeral service will be conducted, 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 24, 2011, at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends, 3-5 p.m., Sunday, October 23, 2011, at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Pleasant Methodist Church or Central Baptist Church.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Fairmont Crossing for their care, love and compassion for Howard and Freida.
