Born on August 27, 1937 in Pleasant View, she was the daughter of the late Joshua L. Foster and Massie T. Foster. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, James Foster, Eleanor McClanahan and Gordon Foster.
Florence was a lifelong member of Elon Baptist Church, serving for over a quarter of a century, as the President of the Women's Missionary Union, with unwavering devotion. Her heart was a treasure trove of history and genealogy, forever captivated by the allure of the past. As a lifelong resident of Elon, she nurtured a profound connection with local history, dedicating herself to its preservation. Her literary talents shone brightly with the publication of "In the Shadow of Tobacco Row Mountain" and her co-authorship of two Amherst County Heritage books. Her commitment extended beyond the written word; Florence was an active member of prestigious organizations, including the Amherst County Museum and Historical Society, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (where she proudly served as regent of the Amherst Chapter), and The National Society of the Colonial Dames XVII. Amidst her historical pursuits, Florence's nimble fingers wove intricate quilts, creating an impressive legacy of craftsmanship. Still, above all these accomplishments, Florence's most cherished roles were as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her love and warmth radiated through generations, leaving an unforgettable mark on all those fortunate enough to know her.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 66 years, Holcomb R. Nixon; her two sons, Alan Nixon and his wife Glenda, Scott Nixon and his wife Jacqueline; grandchildren, Kelly Wall and her husband David, Jennifer Woodard and her husband Mark, Dylan Nixon and his wife Sandra, Dakota Nixon and his wife Carly, Drake Nixon and his wife Brynli; step grandchildren, Nicholas Gowen, Justin Gowen and Olivia Wilkins and her husband Connor; and nine great-grandchildren with one on the way.
A funeral service celebrating her life and faith will be conducted on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Elon Baptist Church officiated by Pastor Steve Tyree and Rev. Cody Bingham. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 29, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Elon Baptist Church.
