William H. Walling, 73, long time resident of Madison, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Branford after a brief illness on December 24, 2011. Born in Springfield, MA the third child of four of the late William T. and Mabel (Edwards) Walling. He graduated from Technical High School in 1956 and went on to earn a Bachelor in Science in Biological Sciences from Springfield College in 1961. He earned his Masters in Biological Sciences from Southern Connecticut State College in 1972 and earned a Masters in Arts and Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University in 1986.
He served in the United States Navy, working in the Naval Hospital in Chelsea, MA, at Southern Europe NATO Command U.S. Naval Station Hospital in Naples, Italy, aboard the USS Plymouth Rock LSD-29 and with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in Springfield MA until 1965.
William worked as a science teacher for 29 years at Guilford High School before his retirement in 1994, teaching General Science, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Botany, and Introduction to Physics and Chemistry.
William also was a member of the VFW Ambulance Association, working as a volunteer EMT from 1977 through 1979, volunteered with St. Margaret Church Social Activities and religious education, was a frequent donor to the American Red Cross Blood Donor Program, and worked with the committee to save Griswold Airport as a public park.
William was predeceased by his wife Vera Pisacane, and his parents William and Mabel (Edwards) Walling. He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Mario and Satomi of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Gary and Cindy of Boston, MA, brothers Thomas of Wilbraham, MA and Roger of Chicopee, MA, and sister Gladys of Vestal, NY and three grandchildren, Christina of Glen Burnie, MD and Addison and Ethan of Boston, MA.
The wake will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church, 39 Academy Street, Madison.
