Raymond C. Torpey, 76, of Madison, beloved husband of Nancy Shank Torpey, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Raymond was born on September 9, 1946 in Fall River, Massachusetts. He was the son of Raymond F. and Mildred McNaughton Torpey.
Ray was a graduate of BMC Durfee HS, in Fall River, MA class of ’64. He went on to Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in Education, graduating in the class of ‘68. Raymond was a physical education teacher for North Branford school system for many years before his retirement.
A beloved physical education teacher, Ray worked in the North Branford School System for over 29 years. He was best known for his wonderful sense of humor, parachute games, and magic tricks. As well as for his contribution to the North Branford Community and the organization of events such as family fun nights, community roundup and the construction of the elementary school playgrounds.
It was a mixture of his ambitious attitude, big dreams and gregarious personality that led to the creation of many lasting partnerships and small business ventures throughout his lifetime.
At home Raymond loved watching movies with his family, playing cards on the deck and spending time on the rocks or playing catch with his grandchildren.
Raymond was a fun-loving man who believed in friendship, laughter and making things happen because as he reminded us everyday " Life is good ". He will be much missed and much loved.
Besides his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his three daughters: Kimberly M. Torpey, Stacey A. Torpey and Shannon Cribbin, all of Madison. Also survive by six grandchildren Kathryn, Michael, and Ryan Donovan as well as Michaela, Madelyn and Evelyn Cribbin. Ray is also survived by his brother, Paul Torpey of Massachusetts.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, April 19 from 4 to 7 PM at The Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Rd. Madison. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday April 20 at 9:30 AM in St. Margaret Church, Academy Street in Madison. Burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Killingworth.
