Margaret Mary O'Harry Caputo

Margaret was born in Bethlehem PA in May 1928 to Mary and Peter O’Harry (nee Oharscak), immigrants from Hungary, who later became US Citizens.  The O’Harrys ran The West Broad Street Tailor Shop in Bethlehem before moving to the Upper East Side of Manhattan (NY) in 1934.

“Margie”, as she was known, attended St Ignatius of Loyola Parochial School and then graduated from Julia Richman High School, both in Manhattan. After graduation, Margaret was a secretary in the executive offices of Lord & Taylor’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue under the leadership of Dorothy Shaver.  Ms. Shaver must have liked Margie very much because she would frequently have her chauffeur bring Margie home or pick her up in the morning to go to work.  Heavy ‘stuff’ for an 18 year old!  She had many other wonderful stories about her years there, including watching Elizabeth Taylor ‘make an entrance’ in her furs, jewels.

She met Eugene ‘Gene’ Caputo on a blind date, set up by mutual friends, Janet and John Everett.  Engaged July 1951, they married February 23, 1952 at the Church of St Ignatius Loyola in Manhattan.  The couple first settled in Tarrytown, NY and moved to Hartsdale, NY in 1959 where they raised two children and were active in church and school related parents activities.

Margie was an officer in Mother’s Clubs for Marymount Junior and Secondary Schools, Sacred Heart School, and Iona Prep.

She bowled and captained a team in the Sacred Heart Women’s Bowling League.  As its Secretary, she was known for the most creative brochures for the end-of-season awards lunches.  A seriously great bowler, Margie won many awards and trophies over the years.

Margie and Gene loved to entertain.  Well known for their Midnight supper parties and family holiday gatherings, Margie was a great cook who always served something new and exciting at these meals. 

During the 1970’s, Margie acquired her own typing service with an office in Hartsdale, a business she enjoyed running for several years.

In 1981, Margie and Gene moved to Elizabeth City, NC to help Gene set up a new business, Dolphin Systems.  An avid gardener, she pursued landscaping and outdoor plantings to create beautiful year round results.

In her later years, following the death of her husband, Margie moved to Connecticut, then Maryland to live with her son and daughter, respectively.  

Marge is predeceased by her parents, Mary and Peter Oharscak; her cherished sister Olga Ann White; and her husband of 65 years, Eugene G Caputo, Sr. Survivors include her daughter Margaret Mary of Lutherville-Timonium MD; son Eugene Jr (Mary Patricia) of Madison CT; granddaughter Sarah of Washington, D.C.; nieces including Carol Ann Langer, Connie Karabelas, Colleen Bensen (Steve), Janet Auer (Michael), Barbara Richards (Charles); grandnephew Thomas Langer Jr. (Elizabeth).

A Catholic funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 14 in St. Margaret Church, Academy Road, Madison, Connecticut at 10:00am. All are welcome to attend. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with the remains of her beloved husband Eugene G Caputo, Sr, a decorated veteran of WWII.
