Laurie Ruth Humphries

Laurie was born in Waterbury, CT on December 28, 1954. She was a member of the first class to graduate from Sheehan High School in Wallingford, and later received a bachelor’s degree from Southern CT State University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Wesleyan University.

She and her husband, Rodney Thomas, were married for almost 34 years. Besides Rod, she leaves behind her sister, Amy and husband Mark Semrau; her brother Roger and his wife Theresa along with their two children Ben and Tara; Rod’s sons, Ben, David and Andrew and her beloved champion welsh corgi, Bond.

Laurie worked as a teacher in the Madison elementary schools for 37.5 years. She delighted in her students and the chance to interest and instruct them in art.

Her own artistic abilities were evident at an early age; when she was16, her talents in sewing and design were so exceptional that she was hired by the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford as wardrobe mistress, and for several summers created, altered and repaired the costumes used in their productions.

Later on, she ran her own successful interior design business in Madison. In addition to her clients, many of Laurie's family and friends benefited from her generous decorating help and her matchless ability to make a home come alive.

Laurie loved to be active, whether biking, exercising, gardening, or walking. She had many interests, happily pursued with her trademark deftness and talent, with which she elevated even humble projects to the level of art. A partial list of her avocations includes cooking, baking, cheese making, knitting beautiful sweaters, sewing, playing the piano, entertaining, painting, traveling and training her dogs.

Those who knew and loved Laurie recognized she was one of a kind. She lived more in her 64 years than most would in 100, and as a result, there was an excitement and interest about her that was irresistible. Those privileged to know her will never stop missing Laurie, but will be strengthened and sustained by priceless memories of her.
