Elinor Christine Smith, born Elinor Christine Schulz, age 87, since 2001of Madison, Connecticut passed away peacefully on July 27, 2019 at Watrous Health Care in Madison after a long illness, with family nearby. Elinor was born June 26,1932 in Hartford and as a young child travelled to Ambur, South India with her late parents, the Reverend and Mrs. Henry A. Schulz. She always spoke of her fond memories of living in India, the friends and animals she met and endeared herself to, as well as having the honor of meeting the venerable Mahatma Gandhi.
As an older child of age 9, Elinor returned to Danbury, CT to complete her education. Elinor attended and graduated Danbury High School, later attending Concordia College, Bronx, NY and graduating from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1952.
Elinor was employed by the Institute of Living, Greenwich Hospital and several long term care facilities, while taking time away from work to raise her children. She was a devoted mother and nurse, concerned about providing the best care for her patients while balancing the responsibilities of family.
Elinor was a resident of the communities of Greenwich, Black Rock (Bridgeport) and Old Saybrook before moving to Madison. She married and later amicably divorced her husband, William R. Smith and they made their home in several states while raising their children, ultimately settling in Greenwich, Connecticut. Elinor was a devoted mother who cherished time spent with family. In addition to raising their children, she maintained her career as a registered nurse. A kind hearted woman, she had a loving and gentle nature with a great sense of humor. Elinor was an avid animal lover, enjoyed baking, quilting, crafts, collecting baseball cards, time spent with family, rides to the beach and shopping excursions.
Elinor will most be remembered for her devotion to her children and her role as a caring mother. In addition to her former husband, she is survived (and will be dearly missed by), her sons: Curtis Allen Smith; Craig Alan Smith and his partner Matthew Morse; Scot Andrew Smith and wife Heather Smith and daughters: Maia Smith, Kayla Smith and Tess Smith; Robb Steven Smith and wife Lydia Smith and son and daughters: Lea Smith, Samantha Smith and Joshua Smith. These among other extended family and friends too numerous to mention. Elinor was also predeceased by her dear and only brother Henry "Hank" Schulz.
Elinor's family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Watrous Health Care staff for their wonderful care and to Elinor's neighbors and many friends for their acts of kindness and support during her illness.
Memorial Services of Remembrance will be private for family. Donations in Elinor's memory may also be made to any local humane society.
