William Roy Whitten, 93, of Macon, passed from these earthly bounds to live with his precious Lord and Savior on Tuesday. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM at Liberty United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bob Shell and Dr. Laudis H. “Rick” Lanford will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Those who wish may make donations to Liberty United Methodist Church, 6511 Houston Road, Macon, Georgia 31216 or to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31204. Active pallbearers will be Mark Johnston, Kim Johnston, Carey Johnston, Pat Patterson, Skip Yetter, and Mackey Skipper. Honorary pallbearers will be Douglas Skipper, Russell Fellows, Milton Myers, and Phillip Davis.
Mr. Whitten was born July 21, 1919 in Macon to the late Theodore James Whitten and the late Rose Bost Naomi Whitten. He was educated in Macon at Virgil Powers Elementary and Lanier High School graduating in 1937. After graduating, Mr. Whitten operated a Pure Oil service station on Vineville Avenue in Macon. From 1942-1946, Mr. Whitten was called up for active military duty by the U. S. Air Force at Wellston AFB, Georgia where he rose to the rank of Staff Sgt. in aircraft maintenance . After WWII, Mr. Whitten was honorably discharged and took a position with Wofford Oil Company in Macon. In 1951, he was called once again to serve his country during the Korean War. After discharge in 1952, he took a position as a civilian at Robins Air Force Base. He entered as a GS 5 step 1 and retired in 1975 as a GS14 step 8.
He loved his family especially grandchildren, who delighted in spending time with and creating videos. He was very active in his community and church as a member of Liberty United Methodist Church and the song leader who lead the congregational singing on Sunday night for many years. He is remembered by so many for his generosity and willingness to help anyone in need. As one of the founding member of the Rutland Community AARP, he supported the group efforts for many years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Sara Ruth Skipper Whitten, of Macon, and his daughter; Dianne (Greg) Cline of Macon, and two grandchildren, Kathleen Marie Kondur and Rajeev Rao Kondur, and many nieces and nephews.
