MACON – William Gooding Hiers, 82, 5056 Wellington Drive, died after a brief illness. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday at Vineville United Methodist Church with Dr. Marcus Tripp and the Rev. Dan Underwood officiating. Burial will be private. The family will meet friends following the memorial service at the church.
Mr. Hiers was preceded in death by his wife, B. Woody Hiers of Macon, GA; his mother, Alison Gooding Hiers; his father, Miles Terry Hiers, Sr. and by his brother, Miles Terry Hiers, Jr. Mr. Hiers was born in Raleigh, NC, and raised in Nashville, TN. His interests during his school years were Scouting and aviation. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the minimum time required and a private pilot’s license at the age of seventeen.
He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Business Administration and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity. Upon graduating from Vanderbilt, Mr. Hiers served in the United States Air Force and, upon discharge, became associated with the Comptroller’s Division of The Procter & Gamble Company. After a number of years with Procter & Gamble, he became Controller of Hospital Corporation of America, Administrator of Coliseum Park Hospital, Macon, GA, Administrative Vice President of Fickling and Walker Inc.; Administrator, College Street Hospital, and Controller of Nottingham, Brook & Pennington, Inc.
Mr. Hiers was a member of Vineville United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board, and was a member and past president of the Mack Anthony Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Riverside Golf and Country Club; Healy Point Country Club; Macon Elks Club; Macon Exchange Club; Statesboro Kiwanis Club; Macon Golden Kiwanis Club; Wesley Glen Ministries Auxiliary; and the Methodist Home for Children and Youth Auxiliary.
Survivors include daughter, Kristin Hiers Howard Nettleton of Macon; daughter Lisa Hiers Ransom of Athens, GA; and daughter Dr. Laurie Hiers Gillespie of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; three grandchildren: Wesley David Howard of Savannah; Greer Emily Ransom of Athens and William Nathaniel Gillespie of Yarmouth; and his devoted dog, Megan of Macon.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204, to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204, or to Wesley Glen Ministry, 3711 Agape Village Road, Macon, GA 31210.
