William “Bill” A. Bynum of Macon passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the age of 96 at his home with Jean, his loving wife of 61 years at his bedside. A visitation will be held at 10:00 am until service. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 11:00 am at Snow’s Funerals and Cremations at Macon Memorial Park, 3969 Mercer University Dr. officiated by Pastor Billy Flowers. Entombment will follow at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery.
Bill was born on October 18, 1926 in Porterdale, Georgia but later resided in Thomaston. In 1944, at the age of 18, he joined the military and served in the Navy through the end of WWII, Korean War, and Cold War. He was honorably discharged in 1951 and was awarded 9 metals for his service.
After returning home he graduated from diesel mechanic school and soon began working for Central Georgia Railroad. And retired from Northfolk Southern with 37 years of devoted service.
He became a Master Mason in 1961 and became an avid supporter of the Scottish Rite, Shriner’s as a Potentate Escort, and Masonic Home for Children. He was awarded his 60th year Apron in 2021.
After retirement, he stayed busy helping the elderly with home repairs and doing things for other people. He just enjoyed people. He never met a stranger and could and would talk with anyone anywhere. He could make you laugh even if you didn’t want to. His favorite thing was to talk with friends, offer them a piece of candy, and leave them laughing sometimes with a big ole hug.
We are sure of one thing….that God made a special person in Bill Bynum. His wife, family, and many friends will never forget how he made us feel and how he loved us. We sure will miss him every day and be thankful we had him in our lives.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Bynum; children, Joy and Hulon Burnette, Bill and Sarah Bynum; grandchildren, Chris and Jena Burnette, Cassie and Brent Johnson, Allyson Bynum, Daniel Cranford, Brittney Cranford, Edward and Angie Majors; great grandchildren, Weston, Will, Morgan and Ellie; a daughter-in-love, Teresa Howell and her son, Clay Howell; and several nieces and nephews.
