Velma Welch Rodgers, 90, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2013 surrounded by her family. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church. Private burial will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Timothy Bagwell and Rev. Helen Willoughby officiating. The family will meet friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, Community Ministries Transitional Housing-Assisted Funds, 1290 College St., Macon GA 31201 or United Hospice, 6060 Lakeside Commons Dr., Macon GA 31210.
Mrs. Rodgers was born in Cordele, Georgia on July 5, 1923 to the late John Melton and Annie Beatrice Kemp Welch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Oliver Rodgers and three sisters, five brothers and a step daughter. She grew up in Valdosta but lived most of her life in Macon where she attended the GAB School of Commerce. She was employed as a legal secretary to the late attorney J. Rene’ Hawkins and for Westmoreland, Patterson and Moseley firm as secretary to Rudolph Patterson. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, the Fellowship Class, United Methodist Women and sang in the choir. For many years she was an active member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister.
Mrs. Rodgers is survived by her children, Steve (Ilene) Rodgers of Macon, Carol R. (Leland) Lee of Macon, grandchildren, Andrew (Ileta) Rodgers, Stephanie Erin R. (Taylor) Frame and Thomas Patterson of Immokalee, FL, two great grandchildren, James Andrew Rodgers, Jr. and Mary Vella Frame, sister, Evelyn (Julian) Norman, and several nieces and nephews.
