Tim was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a devout Methodist and member of Forest Hill United Methodist Church. Tim achieved a MBA in business from Fort Valley State and Georgia College. He was an avid music lover, played several instruments and sang bass in his church choir. A man of many hobbies he and his friend Billy Christie helped dig Ziggy, the whale dinosaur, located at the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences. He also was a lifelong numismatics, collector of many coins. He enjoyed gem mining all over Georgia and North Carolina. He loved stamp collecting from an early age. Tim volunteered to help his local Boys Scout troop many times.
Mr. Merchant is survived by his wife Dorothy C. Merchant; daughter, Diana L. Merchant; his siblings, Lindsey M. Hamrick, Richard G. Merchant, and Bunny M. Nobles; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his father, Richard G. Merchant Sr. and his mother, Grovene L. Merchant as well as his former wife, Clara A. Merchant, mother of his daughter Diana.
