Theresa Hallmark Smith, 100, lived in Macon at the Carlyle Place since 2002. On Saturday, January 21, 2017, burial will be at 9:30 AM at Magnolia Cemetery in Warner Robins. Afterwards, a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 432 Forest Hill Road, Macon 31210. The Rev. Ben R. Wells will officiate. The homily will be given by Deacon John Parnham. The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall immediately following the service. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 20 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street. The family suggests that contributions be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church, 432 Forest Hill Road, Macon 31210 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Mrs. Smith was born in Lineville, Alabama, November 14, 1916, the daughter of William Wyatt Hallmark and Margaret Rosa Smith Hallmark. She graduated from Berry College, where she met her husband, Joe Fred Smith. After college, Theresa’s first job was the W. P. A. in Macon, then Alabama’s Farmers Home Administration, and next, head dietician to 14 schools in Northwest Georgia. While Joe was in the Army during WWII, Theresa ran the Army Mess Hall in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were also stationed in New Haven, Connecticut where Joe was a drill instructor. After the war they lived in Columbus, Georgia and in Dooley County, Georgia. Theresa’s career was teaching home economics and family relations at Warner Robins High School and at Northside High School in Warner Robins. After retirement Theresa and Joe moved to Macon. They traveled extensively and were active members of the Top of Georgia Airstream Club.
They were both loyal Berry College alumni. Joe and Theresa were happily married for 64 years, until his death July 6, 2006. She was preceded in death by brothers, Shaffer and Clayton and sisters, Margaret and Geraldine.
Theresa is survived by two children, Norman Joe Smith, MD (wife Gloria Smith) of Macon, Georgia; daughter, Brenda High (husband John High) of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; grandchildren, Colby Smith (wife Cassie) of Anchorage, Alaska, Rita Aldridge (husband Thomas) of Mooresville, North Carolina, John High (wife Kristin) of Stanfield, North Carolina, Abigail Carriker (husband Billy) of Harrisburg, North Carolina, Rachel Brinkley (husband Junior) of Wilson, North Carolina; and many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
