Macon, GA – Sandra Hurst Smith, 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 12, 2024. Graveside services will be held at Noon on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Liberty Church Macon with Rev. Dr. Beth Sanders officiating.
Sandra was born in Macon to the late Clyde Irene Molton Hurst and John Partridge Hurst. She attended Dr. John H. Heard Elementary School and graduated from A. L. Miller High School for Girls in 1955. After graduation, Sandra joined Martin, Snow, Grant & Napier, LLP working as Legal Secretary for Hendley V. Napier. Upon starting a family, she left the law firm to become a full-time Mom. Sandra was of Baptist faith. She was previously a member of Mabel White Baptist Church and Tattnall Square Baptist Church where she served in Sunday School and on various church committees. Her children graduated from Tattnall Square Academy, and during their school years, she volunteered as Room Mom and also chaired the Spring Fling annual fund-raising event.
She enjoyed visiting family in Rome and Atlanta, and the farm in Vienna, GA; summers with good friend Catherine Pullen and her family at Vinson Valley in Byron, GA; and enjoyed phone calls reminiscing with her friend, Bonnie Butler of Rome, GA about their work days at the law firm. Along with gardening and learning the computer, she enjoyed genealogy research. She explained it was hard work, attention to detail, and not to always rely upon the online available content. In recent years, she completed a project dear to her of having the stone work restored at her family’s cemetery lot.
Sandra is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Wayne Smith; her son, Joel Wayne Smith; her sister, Margaret Hurst Coody; and nephew, Steven Coody. She is survived by her daughter, Jenni (Paul) Wasmer of Tucker, GA; sister, Grace (Gene) Sanders of Atlanta, GA; nephew, Mark Coody (Wendy Cape); nieces, Catharine (Chris) Aguilar, Karen (Raymond) Bloodworth; Sue (Hugh) Richardson; Rev. Dr. Beth Sanders; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family also wants to extend their deepest gratitude to her devoted caregivers, Dolly Estrada and Margaret John, for their love and dedication given to Sandra.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
