Ruth A. Smith, 99, joined her Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 25, 2017. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Rusty Smith and the Rev. Ed Chambless will officiate. The family will meet friends from 1 p.m. to service time on Sunday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smith, wife of the late John Claxton Smith, was born in Gordon the daughter of the late Walter C. and Nellie Stinson Asbell. She was retired from Robins Air Force Base. Mrs. Smith was a member of Mikado Baptist Church, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was an avid Atlanta Braves and NASCAR fan who liked to fish and loved flowers and gardening. Most of all, she loved her family and her church family. Known as “Granny,” she adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren who were aware that they were the “apples of her eye.” The invitation to her home was always open and at almost any time of day, there was food cooking that anyone coming by could eat hot off the stove.
A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she will be missed by those she loved most, her sons, Neal (Nancy) Smith and Tommy (Toot) Mixon; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; her brother, Andy (Verbia) Asbell and a number of nieces and nephews.
