Robert (Roben) W. Weitz died on the morning of October 4, 2023. He died peacefully with his husband at his side. Roben was from Colfax, Washington and Los Angeles, CA. He arrived in Macon in 1995 to join his best friend and life companion. Roben was multi-talented in the arts, journalism, and cooking. He was Natalia’s pastry chef, then worked in visual display at Belk – Matthews and was recognized as a most valuable employee. For most of his time he was employed by the Macon Arts Alliance serving as interim director in ‘99/2000. He was the originator and administrator of the Arts in Education program, and was a passionate champion of arts education in the public schools. He retired from the Arts Alliance in 2001. In retirement he took over as the gallery curator at Theatre Macon, introducing and promoting some of Macon’s best local artists in the Gallery. Actors and staff at the theatre will remember him spending hours installing each exhibit. He became the singular most dedicated advocate for Theatre Macon’s Youth Artist’s Company. He spent hundreds of hours selecting photographs of the YAC shows to have enlarged and on display in the Theatre Macon Gallery. Theatre Macon youth were drawn to his special light and gentle wisdom, where he had a profound impact on three generations of young people who remember him with love and admiration.
Roben was also a tireless partner and collaborator with Theatre Macon’s Artistic Director, Jim Crisp, on all the main stage adult shows. Roben was an endless source of inspiration.
Roben is survived by his brother, Fred (Elaine) of Seattle, Washington, his sister in law, Bonnie (David) Lawrence of Lewisburg, Pa., his nieces Kris, Cheryl, and Theresa, and many other nieces and nephews. And, his best friend, longtime companion, and husband, Jim Crisp. He was that rare man: loved by everyone who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Bass Road. Memorial gifts can be made to Theatre Macon in his memory, or to a charity of your choice, especially those that support children and animals.
