Robert DuMond passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017 at age 89. He was born on April 12, 1927, in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Frank Lee DuMond and Margaret Thomas DuMond. He graduated from East Grand Rapids High School, and after serving in the Army Air Corp in Puerto Rico, continued his education at Grand Rapids Junior College. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for Packaging Corporation while in Grand Rapids, was transferred to Indiana in 1965, and to Macon in 1974. He received his Masters Degree from Purdue in 1973. He became a Professional Engineer in Michigan, Indiana, and Georgia, and was active in the Professional Engineering Society in Macon. While living in Michigan, he was a Mason and Shriner. In Indiana, he volunteered as a District Director for the Boy Scouts. He retired from the Blue Bird Bus Company in Fort Valley. Then he spent his free time studying French at Macon Junior College, tutoring students at Tinsley School, and also teaching reading to adults. He also was a mediator for the Better Business Bureau. As an active member of Riverside United Methodist Church, he served in many capacities.
On August 27, 1949, he married Gladys Fry DuMond. Other survivors are son, Michael (Becky) DuMond, of Albuquerque NM, daughter Elaine Clarke, grandson, Andrew (Natalie) Clarke, granddaughter, Emilie Clarke, and great grandchildren, Sophia and Calvin Clarke, all of Macon, his sisters, Marion Denison and Carolyn (Bob) Laird, of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. His brother, David DuMond, predeceased him. Also included in our family is Warner tenKate, our foreign exchange student from 1968 and his wife, Francien deGroot and their children, Saskia tenKate and Casper tenKate, their spouses and 2 grandchildren all of The Netherlands.
Visitation will be at Riverside United Methodist Church at 11AM on Monday, February 20, 2017 immediately followed by a Memorial Service at 12 Noon with Rev. Chip Strickland and Rev. John Irwin officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Riverside United Methodist Church, 735 Pierce Avenue, Macon, 31204.
