GRAY – Dr. Robert Joseph Cramer, Sr., 85, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Father Allan McDonald will officiate. The Rosary will be said at 6:00 pm Monday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Jones County Kiwanis Club, P. O. Box 2528, Gray 31032 or the American Cancer Society, 804 Cherry Street, Macon 31201.
Dr. Cramer was born in Buffalo, NY in 1926. He graduated from Lockport High School in New York near Buffalo. After the war, he got his B.S. from UGA. He rode his motorcycle south and married a Georgia girl, Juanita Ussery in 1948. He went to Mercer University and got his Master’s and then went back to UGA and received his doctorate in education. In World War II he won the Asian Pacific Ribbon, the Philippines Independence Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theatre Medal, and the Sharp Shooter Award. In the Army Reserve he won the Meritorious Service Award and retired as a full Colonel. He was a coach, teacher, a principal, and an assistant superintendent. Dr. Cramer taught science, biology, and physics and coached basketball, football and baseball.
Dr. Cramer was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Jones County Kiwanis Club and the Georgia Archeological Society. He was the widower of Juanita Ussery Cramer and the son of the late Gilbert E. and Marie Colvin Cramer. In 1987 he married Mary George.
Dr. Cramer is survived by his wife, Mary Cramer of Gray; daughter, Susan C. (Wade) Herring; sons, Joseph C. (Patti) Cramer, Timothy C. (Judy) Cramer, John Michael Cramer, Robert J. Cramer, Jr., Christopher J. (Ginger) Cramer, Jeffery A. (Linda) Cramer; 19 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; step-daughters, Denise (Tim) Richardson and Phyllis (Randy) Little; numerous nieces & nephews.
