Paul Herman Matthews – Macon, Georgia, passed away quietly on February 18, 2016, he was 79. He was born in Yatesville, Georgia October 26, 1936 to J.B. and Mildred (Faske) Matthews. He grew up in Miami, Florida where he graduated from Lindsay Hopkins High School in 1955. He joined the Air Force Reserve in high school and was called to Active Duty during the Berlin Wall Crisis. He served in the Air Force for 7 years. He started working for the City of Miami as a maintenance man in 1955 where he eventually became a supervisor. In 1956 he met his beloved, Honora Mae Crossley, at a diner in Miami, Florida. They were married in June of 1957 and have been together for 58 years. They moved to Macon in 1966 where he worked for Maxon Electronics Company for a year, then moved to Bilco Manufacturing Company on Brookdale Avenue in 1967. He spent the rest of his career as Maintenance Supervisor at Bilco, inventing several machines that helped in their processes. He retired in 1993.
He loved his family, planning trips and travel, wood working, the beach, driving and repairing cars, camping, hiking and backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. He also loved working with the Youth and Explorer groups at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents: J.B. Matthews and Mildred (Faske) Matthews. He is survived by his wife Honora Mae (Crossley) Matthews, siblings, Franklin D. Matthews of Miami, Florida and Laura Sims of Forsyth, Georgia, and his children: Paul F. and Stacey Matthews of Fayetteville, Tennessee, Mark L. and Cindi Matthews of Macon, and Dawn and Brook Batchelor of Jacksonville, Florida, his 6 grandchildren: Lindzi and Lucas Matthews, Elisabeth, Leah and Hope Batchelor, and Jamie Matthews, as well as and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with private burial at a later date. The Rev. Brook Batchelor will officiate. The family will greet friends beginning at 2:00 PM and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church, 432 Forest Hill Road, Macon, GA 31210.
