Otis C. Malcom, Jr. (Brigadier General Retired) of Greensboro at Lake Oconee died Thursday, July 5, 2012 at a local hospital. He was a native of East Point, GA, and a resident of Bibb County for 44 years prior to moving to Greene County in 1990.
Otis was born September 5, 1933 to the late Otis C. Malcom and Mary Lou Burke Malcom. He was a 38 year veteran of the Georgia Army National Guard where he was a full-time technician for 34 years, serving in his last assignment as Chief of Staff for the Georgia Army National Guard and retiring as a Brigadier General. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School and a member of the OCS Hall of Fame, as well as a graduate of the U.S. Army Armor Officer Basic Course, Army Officer Career Course, and the Army Command and General Staff College. During his National Guard service he served as the Senior Tactical Officer at Georgia Military Institutes, the officer producing program for National Guard Officers, President of the National Guard Officer Association, and served in the 48th Combat Brigade in Macon, GA, for 33 years. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Georgia National Guard Distinguished Services Medal, among numerous other awards. He served as Past President of Eatonton Kiwanis Club and a member of the Board of Directors for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Bowman Malcom; daughters, Cynthia Huser (Jay) of Winston Salem, NC, Catherine Singletary (Page) of Austin, TX, Caroline Malcom of St. Joe Beach, FL, and Susan Malcom of Dallas, TX; son, Otis C. Malcom III of Cape San Blas, FL; grandsons, Brett Morris (KyAnne) and Drew Morris (Kelly) all of Smyrna, GA; granddaughters, Sally, Emily, and Lucy Singletary of Austin, TX; great grandson, Tyler Morris of Smyrna, GA; brothers, Archie G. Malcom of Lago Vista, TX, and Wellborn T. Malcom of Leland, NC; and sister, Jean Sawyer of Ponchatoula, LA.
Memorial Services will be conducted Monday at 1:00pm at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville, GA, with full Military Honors. Visitation will be held Saturday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at the funeral home. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association, P. O.
