Mary Frances Godowns Thomas, 96, of Macon, GA, died peacefully March 29 at Pine Pointe Hospice. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Macon Memorial Park with Dr. Mark Hudgins and Rev. Creede Hinshaw officiating.
She was born January 28, 1927, in Wrens, GA, the daughter of the late Clinton Jackson Godowns and Corinne Dixon Godowns, both of Jefferson County, GA. A graduate of Wrens High School, Mary Frances moved to Macon to attend Georgia-Alabama Business School. While in Macon she met her future husband, Hubert Lamar Thomas, on a blind date. They were married for 49 years before his death in 1997.
She was a wonderful wife and a loving homemaker who enjoyed sewing for her three daughters, hand stitching beautiful quilts, and baking caramel cakes to share with family and friends. She especially found great pleasure “digging in the dirt” and growing beautiful roses.
In addition to her family, her life was centered around her church. She was an active member of Ingleside Baptist Church for over fifty years where she faithfully worshiped each week before her health declined. She particularly enjoyed her special friendships with members of the Fidelis Sunday School Class.
She was devoted to her daughters and their families, cherishing each moment she spent with them. Never one to draw attention to herself, she modeled for her family the joy of living a life of humility, simplicity, kindness, gentleness, and love. Her sense of humor was delightfully dry and cute, and she had a sweet disposition and an infectious laugh that will be greatly missed by many who knew and loved her.
She is survived by three daughters: Lynn (Rocky) Stubbs of Milner, GA, Cam (Bruce) Bishop of Macon, GA, and Joan Wilson-Sapp (Charles) of Greensboro, GA; eight grandchildren: Clint Carlisle, Reid Carlisle, Addy Butler, Emily McLean, Cameron Bishop, Catherine Gardner, Jamey Wilson, and Joshua Wilson. She is also survived by 18 great grandchildren, her sister Betty Jean (Ed) Perdue, Wrens, GA, sister-in-law Betty Godowns and Betty Rose Johnson, brother-in-law Carroll A. Walker and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her three brothers.
The family would like to thank the staff of Zebulon Park Health for the love and care given to her as she made Zebulon Park her home. A special thanks also goes to the staff of Pine Pointe Hospice for the tender care and compassion provided during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pine Pointe Hospice or the donor’s favorite charity.
