Mary Brookins Smith, 90, passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Lee County Health Care Nursing Home, joining her recently departed husband of 71 years, Peyton B. Smith, Sr. Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Chapel with Dr. James C. Dant officiating. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southern Care Hospice, 3312 Northside Drive, Bldg. D, Ste. 150, Macon GA 31210 or Highland Hills Baptist Church, 1370 Briarcliff Road, Macon GA 31211.
Mrs. Smith was born March 12, 1920 in Hancock, County to the late Luther and Addie Thompson Brookins. She is preceded in death by her husband, Peyton Benjamin Smith, Sr., her brother, Louie Brookins, and sisters, Mildred Roberts and Julia Smith. She was a charter member of Highland Hills Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith and her husband owned and operated Peyton Smith’s Grocery for 40 years until their retirement in 1980. She was a wonderfully loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sharing much of her love through cooking and baking for others. Mrs. Smith was actively involved in all aspects of the lives of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Peyton Benjamin Smith, Jr. (Juanita) of Gray, Jan Dorsey (Harry) of Albany, and Joyce Draffin of Macon, six grandchildren, Peyton “Andy” Smith (Mary), Joe S. Bridges III, Chad Bridges (Christina), Shannon Dorsey, Ashley Dorsey Butler (David), Natalie Dorsey (Chris Harjes), five great grandchildren, Peyton A. Smith, III, Gabriel Smith, Amber Amerson, Bailey Bridges and Caleb Bridges and many nieces and nephews.
