Mary Pence Irby, 90, passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Harrington House of Carlyle Place in Macon, Georgia. A graveside service will be officiated by Dr. Derek McAleer at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be immediately after the service. For those attending, masks and social distancing are required. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Ave., Macon GA 31204 or Forest Hills United Methodist Church, 1217 Forest Hill Road, Macon GA 31210.
Mary was born in Memphis, TN to the late George and Mabel Pence. She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-two years, William O. Irby. She graduated from Memphis University and had graduate degrees from Emory and Mercer. Mary served as Director of Christian Education in Methodist churches in Arlington, VA and at Cherokee Heights United Methodist Church in Macon. She taught English for 30 years at Miller Junior and Central High School. Mary was a member of Forest Hills United Methodist Church, and enjoyed being a part of the Faithful Friends class and the Good Timer’s Group. Mary served as secretary and vice president at various times and was named the Outstanding Exchangette of 2000.
Survivors who will treasure her memories are her daughter, Melanie I. Grier (Jim) of Macon, brother, George (Nancy) Pence of Memphis, and has several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Harrington House staff, Cambridge Court staff, A Hand to Hold of Carlyle Place and Pine Pointe Hospice for their loving care.
