Funeral Services will be held at Riverside United Methodist Church at 3:00 PM Sunday, November 30, 2014 with the Reverend Steve Waldorf officiating. The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary. Burial will be private.
Mrs. Burnham was born in Macon and lived here for almost all of her amazing life. She was the daughter of the late Charles Manley Gaines, Jr. and the late Iris Taylor Gaines. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Manley Gaines, III. She graduated from Miller High School for Girls in 1949 and from Mercer University in 1953.
She taught school in the Augusta and Bibb County Public school systems and helped her husband in his medical office in later years. She was a member of the Macon Civic Woman’s Club, where she served as its president in 1973. She was also a member of and active in The American Cancer Society, the Federated Garden Club of Macon, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Bibb County Medical Society, the Macon Council of United Church Women, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Mrs. Burnham volunteered serving senior citizens in need with Golden Opportunities. She loved her church and sang in the Chancel Choir. She was a member of the Beaty-Gray Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Dr. James W. Burnham Jr., five children, James W. “Chip” Burnham III of Roswell, Matthew Charles Burnham (Cindy) of Marietta, Robert Kirk Burnham (Marty) of Macon, Carol Burnham Elmore of Macon, Joy Burnham Williams (Wes) of Smyrna; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
