MACON – Martha Harpole Jones, age 87, died on August 24, 2010 after a prolonged illness at The Harrington House division of Carlyle Place where she had lived independently for the past fifteen years.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband of almost fifty years, USAF Col. Robert Louis Jones and her first-born son, Robert Louis Jones, Jr., both formerly of Macon. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Leigh Jones, MD and her husband, Richard A. “Ric” Lavoie of Lake Oconee; her second son, William Walton Jones and his wife, Carole of Casselberry, Florida; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Mrs. Jones attended Mississippi State College for Women and graduated from Mississippi College with her BS in Early Childhood Education. She later received her Masters in Education from Mercer University. She taught first grade at several Air Force Bases around the world and retired from teaching in 1982 from First Presbyterian Day School, which she had begun with Henry Middlebrooks. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she had been a long time Bible teacher and a member of the choir. Mrs. Jones was also a member of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Visitation for the family will be held at the Parish House of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Friday, August 27, 2010 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. She will be buried in Riverside Cemetery on Saturday at 1:00 PM where her ashes will rest beside her beloved husband, Robert and their son, Robert. A memorial mass will follow the funeral and will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Hal Weidman officiating. Family, friends, former students and all who loved her are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s outreach program at 753 College Street, Macon 31201 or to the charity of one’s choice.
