Dr. Marjorie Lanier Sugrue, 78, passed away peacefully at her residence April 9, 2024. Marjorie was born in Macon, Georgia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Noel Johnson Lanier, and was preceded in death by her parents and husband Vincent Sugrue. Marjorie is survived by her sister Linda Lanier Richardson (Elmo), niece Jennifer Richardson Nelson (Dave), great niece Elizabeth Nelson, and great nephew Lanier Nelson.
Marjorie attended Alexander IV elementary school in Macon and graduated from A. L. Miller High School and the University of Georgia, always an avid UGA football fan. She then continued her education by proudly earning her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Marjorie served as a doctor at the Houston County Emergency Room for over 23 years until she suffered serious injuries in a ski accident in Utah and was unable to work.
Marjorie was a tenacious, self-made woman, accomplished doctor, world traveler, and horse and dog loving woman. Throughout her life, Marjorie had the opportunity to visit places that some only read about in books. Her two favorite places to see first hand included the Taj Mahal and the Galapagos Islands. When she was not working or traveling, she devoted her time to her horses and dogs. Marjorie’s favorite horse was an Egyptian Arabian named Badr (“Spirit of the Wind” in Egyptian.) She brought her beloved Badr over from Egypt at 6 months old. He was loved by Marjorie for the next 26 years. There was never a dull moment listening to her tales of traveling around the country showing Badr and hearing stories of her favorite dogs, Muffin, who was by her side during medical school, and Rasputin, an English Mastiff.
A graveside services will be held at Riverside Cemetery on Friday, April 12, 2024 at 2:00pm with Dr. Marcus Tripp officiating. Visitation will be held immediately following the service.
The family would like to thank her loving caregivers and Heart of Georgia Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart of Georgia Hospice, the Humane Society, or to the donor’s favorite charity.
