Macon – Marie Butler Neel, wife of Joseph N. Neel, died peacefully on Friday, September 24, 2010 after an eight year valiant battle with cancer at Pine Point Hospice of Central Georgia as their first patient. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at First Presbyterian Church with private burial in Riverside Cemetery before hand. The Rev. Chip Miller, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church will officiate and the Rev. Dr. T. Hartley Hall, a son of First Presbyterian Church may also participate. The family will meet friends from 6 until 7 PM on Sunday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the former Sr. Neel Home, now the Federated Garden Club of Macon, 730 College Street, Macon 31201.
Mrs. Neel, was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Key McDonald, her father, William Monroe Butler and grandparents, Mayor and Mrs. James L. Key, all of Atlanta. Mrs. Neel attended Garden Hills Grammar and North Fulton High Schools in Atlanta and graduated from Wesleyan College.
In her earlier years, she was active in the community serving on the boards of the Junior League of Macon, the Town and Country Garden Club, the Federated Garden Club and the Boys Club of Macon. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of the Canterbury Class.
Regretfully, she leaves her husband of fifty-one years, Joseph N. Neel; her daughter, Marie Tillman Neel; her sons, Roland H. Neel II (Kay) of Macon and Joseph N. Neel IV (Susie) of Dunwoody; grandchildren, Roland Hall Neel III, Kaitlyn Marie Neel, Joseph Norris Neel V and Reid Key Neel; stepchildren, Joseph Neel Bell (Vicky) of Atlanta and Patricia Bell Walters of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Gay B. McNemer (Philip) of Hixson, TN and Carol B. Oslin (Curtis) of Dunwoody; stepbrother, Graham McDonald (Page) of Fayetteville.
