A visitation for John will be held Thursday, June 27, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Martha Bowman United Methodist Church, 500 Bass Rd., Macon, Georgia 31210, followed by a Celebration of his Life at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at 3:00 PM in Walnut Cemetery in Unadilla, Georgia. Rev. Mark Magoni and Rev. Jay Tucker will officiate. Rev. Carroll was born Dooly County, Georgia on December 30, 1935, the son of the late Florene Shurley Carroll and John B Carroll, Sr. He graduated from Unadilla High School in 1953; worked at Robins Air Force Base from 1953-56; graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1960 (BS); and Emory University "Candler School of Theology" in 1963 (Masters of Divinity).
He entered the Christian ministry in 1956, was ordained a Deacon in The South Georgia Conference of The Methodist Church in 1962 and an Elder in 1963. He served eleven appointments in the South Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church, totaling fifty years, and church law required him to retire in 2006. His appointments were as follows: Toombs County Circuit; Uvalda; Alamo; Rochelle; Lakeland; Sylvester; Claxton; Americus District Superintendent; St. Simons Island, Wesley Monumental; and Executive Director, South Georgia United Methodist Foundation. He also served as the Chairman of the South Georgia Conference Committee on Evangelism for two quadrennia; Chairman of the Southeastern Jurisdictional Association of Evangelism for eight years; Chairman, South Georgia Winter Camp Meeting Committee; Chairman, South Eastern Jurisdictional Camp Meeting Committee. He was a Trustee for Epworth by the Sea; Magnolia Manor; The United Methodist Children Home; Mission On The Move. He retired in 2006.
Rev. Carroll then served as Interim Pastor at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), located at 2306 Vineville Ave. for three years. Throughout his retirement, he was actively involved in the community activities and his local church. He experienced the enjoyment of occasionally teaching "The Nan Freeman Sunday School Class", Martha Bowman United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed the Christian brotherhood of the ROMEO mens group of Martha Bowman UMC, which he helped to teach and lead. He and his wife have continued to live in Macon following his retirement. He loved God, his family, friends and The United Methodist Church. He was a great outdoorsman who enjoyed God's creation throughout life. He lived his life with a heart full of faith and joy, and now he has moved on to eternal life trusting Jesus Christ as his Savior.
Rev. Carroll is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ann Woodruff Carroll; 3 children, John B Carroll, III (Beth), Catherine Carroll Tucker (Jay), and Michael Thomas Carroll; 5 grandchildren, John B Carroll, IV (Heidi), Andrew F. Carroll, Caroline Carroll Kennedy (Timothy), Mary Catherine Tucker, and John Ross Tucker; 3 great-grandchildren, Anna Marie Carroll, Claire Elizabeth Kennedy, and Margaret "Molly" Grace Carroll.
Snow's Memorial Chapel, Bass Road, has charge of arrangements.
