James Otis Venable, Jr., 82, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at his residence. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held Monday, May 10, 2010 at 1P.M. at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Moon will officiate. The family will meet friends from Noon until service time at the funeral home. Mr. Venable, son of the late James O. and Mary Jones Venable, Sr. and was born in Montgomery, AL. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Helen Ann Bozsa Venable. He was a graduate of Lanier High School and attended Mercer University. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1946-1949. He was retired from Robins Air Force Base after thirty-five years of service as Chief of the 1926 Communications and Installation Group. Mr. Venable was awarded outstanding performance ratings and countless letters of commendation. For his outstanding services to the Tennessee Air National Guard, the Governor of Tennessee appointed him to the grade of Colonel. He was also a liaison with the Georgia Air National Guard. During the Cuban crisis in 1960-1961, he was the project officer assigned to install various types of radars, radios, teletypes, telephones and crypto equipment for the defense of the United States. Mr. Venable spent much of his career installing global radar systems that provided security for the United States Air Force. He managed the Southern Air Defense radar installations at Dauphin Island, Al, El Paso and Odessa, TX, Phoenix, AZ and Lake Charles, LA and for his outstanding performance on these installations; he received a letter of commendation from Brigadier General Burris. After retirement he was employed as a Quality Control Manager for Northrop Grumman and was a start up owner in Applied Technology.
He was a devoted husband and father whose life was centered around the love and care of his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Venable was a member of Martha Bowman Memorial Methodist Church. Mr. Venable was an active member and had previously served as vice president of the Waters Edge Homeowners Association. -He will be missed by those who loved him most, his daughters, Carol Spires of Suwanee, Kathy (Stewart) Brown and Karen (Bill) Ennis, all of Macon; his much adored grandchildren, Mark Floyd of Suwanee, Amy (Todd) Donaldson of Springfield, IL, Matthew Brown, Spencer Ennis and Rebecca Ennis, all of Macon; his great grandchildren, Dalton Donaldson and Emma Donaldson of Springfield, IL; siblings, Anne V. Tucker of Macon, Charles (LouMerle) Venable of Warner Robins, Glenn (Barbara) Venable of Milledgeville and Linda Stahlberg of Macon, and several nieces and nephews.
