James Augustus Smith, III, age 89, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on January 24, 2022. Private burial service will be held at Riverside Cemetery (Northgate). Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 27, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church, Macon, GA with the Rev. Chip Miller and Rev. John Kinser officiating.
The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the memorial service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, “Mission to the World” fund, 682 Mulberry Street, Macon 31201.
Mr. Smith was born on February 18, 1932 in Macon, Georgia to James A. Smith, Jr and Marguerite McLucas Smith. He attended Elam Alexander School IV and graduated from Lanier High School for Boys. He attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and graduated from Mercer University.
He married Jeanie Zeigler of Macon on August 24, 1952. As Lieutenant, he served in the United States Army for 2 years in Fort Lee, Virginia and Fort McClellan, Alabama. In 1956, Mr. Smith began working for S&S Cafeterias, his family’s business. He remained with Smith & Sons Foods, Inc. becoming the company’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board until his death.
He and his wife, Jeanie, and children lived in Daytona Beach for 10 years, working with S&S Cafeterias before returning to Macon in 1967. Jimmy was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, serving there as a Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of the Canterbury Sunday School Class. He was an Eagle Scout, a member of the National Restaurant Association, Gideons International, Rotary International, Masonic Lodge F&AM #5, Scottish Rite Bodies, Al Sihah Shrines Ambassador, member of Shrines Jesters, Idle Hour Country Club, Sons of American Revolution, and Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was a past member of the Advisory Board of Citizens & Southern National Bank/Nations Bank, Young President’s Organization, World Business Council, and served on the Board of Directors of the Macon Heritage Foundation, Wesleyan College, and Haggai Institute.
Mr. Smith is survived by three children, James A. Smith IV (Melissa), Judson R. Smith (Sandra) and Jill Smith Radney (Derek); ten grandchildren, William D. Smith, James A. Smith V, Christian R. Smith, Matthew A. Smith, John-Mark Smith, Andrew C. Smith, Nathan E. Smith, Benjamin D. Adrien, Sarah R. Davlin, and Christopher T. Wilkins. He is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, J.A. and Marguerite Smith; his wife, Jeanie; son, Jeffery Russell Smith; and his brother Robert A. Smith, Sr.
