  James was a good example of what a good friend is..... He was thoughtful,  fun, dependable, and if he knew a friend was in need of his assistance he was right there...
He enjoyed good intellectual conversation and a good bike ride..
He was very proud of his nieces and nephew... And enjoyed updating about their successes....He will be missed.

My heart felt condolences to James’ family.  I will always remember James as the best conversationalist. He was educated enough to discuss absolutely anything; always ready to teach and learn more. James was always a true gentleman with a respect for others and a genuine interest in their well-being. I and my family have been grateful for him in our lives.  Many days we kept him too long walking around our yard, talking and laughing.  He will always be a measure for kindness, respect, and true joy of life.    Lou Warren

He was our friend and walking buddy. This was from a few years back, at the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds. You are missed. 

James was a dear friend, one of the pack, gentle & wise, bike mechanic, Iron Man, backpacker, distance runner, arborist, farmer, avid reader, searcher, woodsman, nutritionist, tree-planter, steward and contributor. He will be immensely missed by all of us. 
We extend our deepest sympathies to the Oetter family.

I knew James as a caring person and friend.  He helped me with outside work around my house.  He planted a sassafras tree for me from an off-shoot from one on his mothers' home.  It is growing strong and tall; it will always remind me of him and his kindness.  

My brother cared about other people.  He was always engaged with his friends and family, and if you were anywhere within earshot, you were his friend or family.

It took us a couple of years to clear out the field between the barn and the farmhouse.  James & I had several techniques we used to remove invasive shrubs and vines.  This photo from 2012 captures the moment that we finally conquered the orchard growth, after many years of effort.
