James “Andy” Andrew Asbell, 97, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Snow’s at Macon Memorial Park with Rev. Rusty Smith, Rev. Ed Chambless, and Rev. James Harrison, and Dr. Ron Comfort officiating. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mikado Baptist Church Mission Fund, 6751 Houston Road, Macon GA 31216 and Ambassador Baptist College, P.O. Box 158, Lattimore NC 28089, or Homestead Hospice of Georgia, 500 Osigian Blvd., Suite 300, Warner Robins GA 31088.
Andy was born in Dry Branch, Georgia to the late Walter Charles and Nellie S. Asbell, and was preceded in death by his wife, Verbie Ila Grimes Asbell of 73 years and 3 ½ months; sons, Jamey Aaron Asbell and James Anthony “Tony” Asbell; and daughter-in-law, Deborah Barnes “Debbie” Asbell. Andy had been married to Verbie Ila Grimes Asbell since 1946 until her passing in 2019 and she was the love of his life. He was a faithful member of Mikado Baptist Church, was a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and was involved in various ministries of the church. Andy also served on the Board of Directors for Ambassador College as well as on the Child Evangelism Committee. For many years Andy was a bus driver for the Bibb County School System and was owner and operator of New Way Cleaners and was assisted by his wife with the business for over 60 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Kay Asbell Arnold McCollum; grandchildren, Brent Benjamin (Brenda) Arnold, Brian Allen Arnold, Chad Andrew (Lisa) Arnold, Deirdre Nicole Asbell (Drew) Copelan, and Andrea Asbell Smith; ten great grandchildren, Megan Nicole Arnold, Brooke Elizabeth Arnold, Hunter Nicole Copelan, John Parker Copelan, Vivian Jewel Arnold, Alivia Ila Arnold, Eva Elizabeth Arnold, Isaac James Arnold, Jackson Anthony Smith, Ella Francis Smith; one great great granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
