Glen Haskins will officiate with Greg Wood assisting. The family will greet friends after the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Tattnall Square Baptist Church, 4925 Zebulon Road, Macon, GA 31210, or to Heartland Hospice, 200 Northside Crossing, Macon, GA 31210.
Mr. Wood was born May 20, 1930 in Macon, Georgia, the son of the late Rabun Macon Wood and his wife, Laura Geeslin Wood. After graduation from Lanier High School in 1948, he attended Georgia Tech and earned a degree in mathematics from Mercer University. After service as a lieutenant in the US Army for two years, he began working at A.S. Hatcher Company in Macon; he also served as a lieutenant in the US Army Reserve, and later began working at Robins AFB as an engineering recruiter in the civilian personnel office. His civil service career exceeded 36 years. He was of the Baptist faith, and was a lifelong member and life deacon of Tattnall Square Baptist Church. He served on the Board of Directors of Tattnall Square Academy, as well as the Board of Directors of the All-American Soap Box Derby and as Southeast Regional Director. Additionally, he was a past president of the Pony League of Teenage Baseball at Morgan Field. His love for God and country was consistent with that of his forbearers; all of his American ancestors were either born in the country or came here prior to 1776- none came after. Seventeen of his male ancestors fought to free us from British rule and oppression during the War for American Independence, and three of his great grandfathers fought for their families with others to defend the South against Northern aggression during the War for Southern Independence. At no time were any of these ancestors ever false to themselves, their blood, or their manhood.
Survivors include his wife Betty Messer Wood; two sons, Jack L. Wood, Jr. and wife, Sylvia of Macon, and James R. Wood and wife, Ginny of Juliette; two brothers, Rabun M. Wood, Jr. of Maitland, Florida, and Richard H. Wood of Nashville, Tennessee; three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, four nephews, three nieces, and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his brother Marion Geeslin “Chubby” Wood. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Bolingreen Nursing Home and the nursing staff of Heartland Hospice.
