Hubert Alvin Williams, "Al" 93, of Macon, GA, passed away on April 7, 2023. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 from 10:00 am until service time at Highland Hills Baptist Church. A funeral service and celebration of life will follow beginning at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at Middle Ground Cemetery near Chester, Georgia at 3:00 pm. Dr. James C. Bruner will officiate. Mr. Williams was born on December 15, 1929, in Laurens County, GA. Beginning at an early age, he worked on his family farm with his father and brothers. After graduating from Dexter High School in 1947 and joining The National Guard in 1948, he moved to Macon with $10 in his pocket. Some of Mr. Williams' early jobs once arriving in Macon included: a grocery store, salesman at R.A. McCord Ford and a Coca Cola truck driver. Mr. Williams remained in The National Guard for over 22 years and retired in 1970 as a Lt. Colonel.
In 1956, "Al" Williams purchased Sanco Products Company with his dear friend, Wallace Hogan. Sanco continues to be a success today, now operated by Mr. Williams' son. In 1974, Mr. Williams founded Macon Bank, now Wells Fargo, and served on several bank boards. Mr. Williams was quite involved in real estate and real estate development and owned many properties throughout the area. He was also the owner and operator of Johnson-Williams Insurance Agency in the late 1970s.
Mr. Williams found two things most important: family and education. He was extremely proud of his family's farming heritage. He maintained a working farm in Cadwell, GA while building his career. The farm was a place of joy and solace for him, as well as a spot for his beloved family to gather. A close knit family meant so much to him. Mr. Williams was also dedicated to the importance of education. He gave 25 years of service to Mercer University serving on its Board of Trustees. He was both Finance Chairman and Chairman of the Board, succeeding the late Griffin Bell. He was instrumental in the founding of The School of Medicine, The School of Engineering and The School of Theology. The man who advised his sons to "make things happen" certainly practiced what he preached! In his younger years, Mr. Williams enjoyed hunting and was a lifelong avid reader. Mr. Williams was a member and deacon of Highland Hills Baptist Church and active in The Chamber of Commerce, The Industrial Authority (Chairman) and The Middle Georgia Area Planning Commission (Chairman.) This self described "country boy from Laurens County" accomplished much more than he imagined as a boy on the farm!
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of 34 years, Peggy Jean Outlaw Williams; sons, Larry A. Williams and Garry D. Williams (Kelly); stepson, J. Chris Moorman (e was preceded in death by Ruby Davidson Williams, his wife from 1951-1976, his parents, Henry Virgil WilliaKelly); 2 grandchildren, including Chance Moorman; a number of nieces and nephews. Hms and Ola Mae Mullis Williams and his siblings: Avis, Gladys, Evelyn, R.H., Albert and Calvin. He will be deeply missed and we await when we will "hear his voice" once again.
