MACON – George Felton Jones, Sr., 88, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2011 at his residence surrounded by his family. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Luther Strickland, Jr. officiating and with full Military Honors. The family will meet friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Mr. Jones, son of the late Clarence Franklin Jones and Jadie Mae Singleton Jones, was born in McIntyre, GA. He served with the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, September 27, 1944. Mr. Jones was a foreman retired from Armstrong World Industries and after his retirement, worked as a parking attendant with the Middle Georgia Hospital Parking Lot for fifteen years where he enjoyed meeting people and making new friends. He was a member of Napier Avenue Church of God.
Survivors include his devoted wife of sixty-six years, Volenna Jones of Macon; his two sons, George (Eloise) Jones, Jr. and Mike Jones, both of Macon; his daughter, Georgene (Geoffrey) Wehe of Greensboro, NC; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews and his loyal companion, his dog, “Precious.”
