MACON – Gary Wayne Curtis, 58, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2010 at his home after a courageous four year battle with cancer. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010 in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Glenn Lyles and the Rev. Len Woodard will officiate. The family will meet friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the funeral home and while flowers are surely acceptable, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 4406, Macon, GA 31208.
Mr. Curtis was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Curtis, and was a lifelong resident of Macon. A 1970 graduate of Willingham High School, he and his team won the 1969 Baseball State Championship. He was a proud Willingham Ram! Gary remained an avid fan of baseball and football no matter what age the players or the team. He loved the outdoors and loved hunting. He served with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department for twenty-seven years where he was a member of the SWAT Team and a member of the Police Officers Association of Georgia. Mr. Curtis was a member of Pine Forest Baptist Church.
A wonderful and loving father, he will be missed by his children, Hannah (Troy) Avery and Russell Curtis, all of Macon; his mother, Bessie R. Curtis of Macon; his sister, Shirley Smith of Macon; his niece, Michelle Smith Harris of Macon and his beloved dogs, Daisy Mae, Moo and Roscoe.
