Dr. Ernest Lee (D.D.) Moore Jr. passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 after a brave battle with cancer. Dr. Moore was born in Macon on October 2, 1926, the son of the late Ernest Lee Moore, Sr. and Irene McAuley Moore. He was a life long resident of Macon and practiced general dentistry in Macon for 59 years. His love and concern for his many patients thru the years was his life’s passion. Dr. Moore was a graduate of Lanier High School for Boys, and enlisted at the age of 17 into the Navy during World War II in the medical corp. He was a lab technician at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland that served as a biological warfare installation. After the war, he returned to Macon and graduated from Mercer University with a double major in biology and chemistry where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He later received his degree in dentistry from Emory University.
Dr. Moore was past president of the K. A. Alumni Association and a life member of the American and Georgia Dental & Central District Dental Associations where he served as chairman of various committees of the Central District Dental Association. Dr. Moore was also chairman of the professional division of the United Way.
D.D. was a charter and founding member of the Macon Civic Club and served several terms on the Board of Directors. He had “one hell of a good time” in the many Civic Club shows that he participated in throughout the years. He was also a member of Idle Hour Golf & Country Club.
Dr. Moore was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and served several terms on the Vestry and as a Senior Warden. He served on the Board of Directors of St. Paul’s Apartments & Village and as president.
D.D. was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Betty Capel Moore , his sisters, Macie Roberts and Melba Walker, and by his daughter-in-law Lisa Moore. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend that leaves many to cherish his fun personality and great sense of humor. Dr. Moore is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kay Sconyers Moore; six children: E. Lee Moore III of Delray Beach, Florida, Craig Moore of Athens, Ga, Ashley Severance and Gwen (Jim) Wilson both of Macon, Wade Moore(Judy) of Greensboro, Georgia and Holly McManus(Bob) of Knoxville, Tennessee; sister, Irene McCormick of Macon; grandchildren, Albert Swann(Caroline), Mallary Williams (Sam), Chandler Severance, Morgan Guirtz, Kaiser Swann, Clay McManus, Heyward Severance, Walton Moore, Hunter Moore, Claire Moore, Wade McManus, and Reid Wilson. His first great grandchild is due in October.
A Celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will be private. Father Hal Weidman will officiate. The family encourages friends to meet with them following the service in the Parish Hall of the Church in lieu of a visitation at the home. The family asks that flowers be omitted and if so a desired that donations be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 753 College Street, Macon 31201 or to the donor’s favorite charity.
