Ellen O’Neal Peters died Sunday, February 3, 2013, at age 99. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Forsyth Road, led by Dr. John Horton and the Rev. Scott Dickison. Pallbearers will be Hank O’Neal, Roland Alston, Mark Alston, Joe Christopher, Mark Alston, Jr., Michael Alston, Chris Allen and Lee Land. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be given to Macon Outreach at Mulberry, 719 Mulberry Street, Macon, GA 31201. The family may be contacted at the residence, 1235 Bass Road, Macon on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M.
Mrs. Peters was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-five years, Vincent Ignacious Peters; sisters, Dorothy O’Neal Townsend and Martha O’Neal Searcy; brother, Hansley Thomas “Hank” O’Neal; her stepmother and aunt, Amelia Bass O’Neal; and niece, Erin O’Neal.
She was born July 2, 1913 to Hansley Thomas O’Neal and Georgia Ellen Bass O’Neal. A longtime member of First Baptist Church, she was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class and the Roundtable. She was a member of the Mary Hammond Washington Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonel Thomas Hardeman Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Colonial Dames.
Mrs. Peters is survived by her sister, Claudia “Tossy” O’Neal Alston; sister-in-law, Bernice O’Neal; nieces and nephews, Eden Christopher (Joseph), Roland Alston (Mary Jane Hasek), Mark Alston (Dawn), Hank O’Neal (June), Jay O’Neal (Donna), Patricia DeMarcus (Keith), Georgia Ellen Hendricks (Bill), and Amelia Anne Cook; many great nieces and great nephews, and a great-great niece and great-great nephew, many cousins, other relatives and friends.
