Edna Earl Johnson, affectionately called Babe, was born on Thursday, April 11, 1929 in Indian Springs, North Carolina to Rudolph (Kornegay) and Minnie Belle Hardy. The family relocated to New York City, New York after her mother’s passing at the age of twenty-nine. Babe, her brothers, Gurney “Bo”, Fred and John, and sister Daisy Lee “Little Daisy” were lovingly raised by her father & stepmother, Daisy “Big Mom”.
Though she never gave birth, Babe’s marriage to Ralph Johnson, Sr, blessed her with three wonderful bonus children: Ralph Jr, Yvonne, and Julian. She also loved all children and took pleasure in nurturing them throughout her lifetime. After the ending of her marriage, Babe relocated with her brother Fred and his wife Alberta to Stone Mountain, Georgia whereby she cared for Alberta and Alberta’s grandmother during their illnesses. Babe remained with her brother, Fred, until after their passing.
Babe enjoyed a full life of close friends and fun activities as a resident of Hairston Lake Apartments for seniors. She volunteered for local political campaigns, honed new skills through on-site classes, and shared her vast life experiences while building lasting bonds with new friends. Babe’s design sensibility transformed her unit into a welcoming and fashionable haven where she continued to host cherished loved ones and nurture young friends, who affectionately called her “Aunt Babe”. Her first cousin, Clinton Fort, relocated Babe to Middle Georgia after a serious fall and progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. The moving van from Stone Mountain included an abundance of clocks, piggy banks, wavy mirrors, and interior decor.
For eleven years, Ms. Johnson was a proud resident of Willow Creek Personal Care Home in Centerville, Georgia and later Macon, Georgia. She enjoyed her golden years in the south where she never met a stranger, instead she excitedly reminisced and shared the sights, sounds and landmarks of New York City.
Babe was always classy and elegant while still being witty and maintaining a spirit of independence. Alzheimer’s disease and aging did not stop her from recalling certain things like telephone numbers to call when she was out of Oreos. She also remembered to look her best at all times with socks matching her tops, brooches to match her many scarves, and lipstick as the finishing touch.
To know Edna, Babe, Babes, BJ and Ms. Johnson was to love her - for she was kind, purposeful, friendly, generous, outspoken, and full of compliments and gratefulness; therefore, she will always be remembered!
Her sweet memory will be treasured by her loving and supportive bonus son Julian Johnson of New York City; three nieces: Cynthia (Steve) Chamberlain of Kentucky, Deborah Pressey of Brooklyn, Brenda (Eddie) Allen of The Bronx, three nephews: William J. (Lydia) Crutchfield of North Carolina, Michael (Margot) Carnegie, and Evan Carnegie both of New York City, one Goddaughter: Deborah “Mike” Terrell of The Bronx, a devoted first cousin Clinton (Diane) Fort of Monroe County, GA and a host of cousins, supportive friends and the caring Willow Creek PCH community.
