Martha Doris Allen Cable, 95, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2016. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Donald Charles Frost officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Paul E. Cable Scholarship Fund at Mercer University, Macon, Georgia.
She was born to the late Thomas Lee and Jessie Hand Allen, May 23, 1921, in Cleburne County, Alabama. Doris graduated from high school in Heflin, Alabama and later from Gadsden Business College in Gadsden, Alabama. She was married to the late Dr. Paul Elvin Cable in 1943.
Doris and her husband lived in Alabama and Mississippi before moving to Macon, Georgia in 1960, where Dr. Cable was a Professor of Education and Director of Graduate Studies at Mercer University. She retired from the Georgia Department of Education after 23 years as Assistant to the Superintendent of the Georgia Academy for the Blind. Doris was a long-time member of Vineville Baptist Church and was one of the founding members of Northway Baptist Church. Among many other activities, she was President of the SAE Mothers of Minerva Club and active in the Mercer University Woman’s Organization.
She is survived by three children: Lou April Cable Frost (Chuck) of Ridgeland, Mississippi, Paul Allen Cable (Susan) of Macon, Georgia and James Shade Cable (Kathy) of Dahlonega, Georgia. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Christopher Frost, Cable Frost, Payton Churchwell, Betsy Norwood, Paul Cable, John Cable. Doris is also survived by fourteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
